AVR120: Characterization and Calibration of the ADC on an AVR

Features
• Understanding Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) characteristics
• Measuring parameters describing ADC characteristics
• Temperature, frequency and supply voltage dependencies
• Compensating for offset and gain error

1 Introduction
This application note explains various ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) characterization parameters given in the datasheets and how they effect ADC measurements. It also describes how to measure these parameters during application testing in production and how to perform run-time compensation for some of the measured deviations.
A great advantage with the Flash memory of the AVR is that calibration code can be replaced with application code after characterization. Therefore, no code space is consumed by calibration code in the final product.

2 Theory
Before getting into the details, some central concepts need to be introduced. The following section (General ADC concepts) can be skipped if quantization, resolution, and ADC transfer functions are familiar to the reader.

2.1 General ADC concepts
The ADC translates an analog input signal to a digital output value representing the size of the input relative to a reference. To get a better basis for describing a general ADC, this document distinguishes between ideal, perfect and actual ADCs.
An ideal ADC is just a theoretical concept, and cannot be implemented in real life. It has infinite resolution, where every possible input value gives a unique output from the ADC within the specified conversion range. An ideal ADC can be described mathematically by a straight-line transfer function, as shown in Figure 1.

ZigBit™ 2.4 GHz Amplified Wireless Modules
...................................................................................................................
ATZB-A24-UFL/U0
Datasheet

 Summary
ZigBit™ Amp is an ultra-compact, extended range, low-power, high-sensitivity 2.4GHz
IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee® OEM module from Atmel. Based on the innovative Atmel's mixed-signal hardware
platform, this module is enhanced by an output power amplifier and an input low-noise amplifier,
and is designed for wireless sensing, monitoring & control and data acquisition applications. ZigBit Amp
modules eliminate the need for costly and time-consuming RF development, and shortens time to market
for wireless applications with extended range requirements.
Two different versions of ZigBit 2.4 GHz Amplified modules are available: ATZB-A24-UFL with built-in
U.FL antenna connector and the ATZB-A24-U0 with unbalanced RF output. These modules are an addition
to the ZigBit family represented by ATZB-24-A2 and ATZB-24-B0. In addition Atmel offer the ZigBit
900 MHz Wireless Module ATZB-900-B0 [2].

Applications
ZigBit module is compatible with robust IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee stack that supports a self-healing, selforganizing
mesh network, while optimizing network traffic and minimizing power consumption. Atmel
offers two stack configurations: BitCloud and SerialNet. BitCloud is a ZigBee PRO certified software
development platform supporting reliable, scalable, and secure wireless applications running on Atmel’s
ZigBit modules. SerialNet allows programming of the module via serial AT-command interface.
The applications include, but are not limited to:
• Building automation & monitoring
– Lighting controls
– Wireless smoke and CO detectors
– Structural integrity monitoring
• HVAC monitoring & control
• Inventory management
• Environmental monitoring
• Security
• Water metering
• Industrial monitoring
– Machinery condition and performance monitoring
– Monitoring of plant system parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow, tank level, humidity,
vibration, etc.
• Automated meter reading (AMR)

AVR1605: XMEGA™ Boot Loader Quick Start
Guide

Features
• XMEGA boot loader
• AVROSP compatible
• Example application
• C-code sample application for Self Programming
• Read and Write Both Flash and EEPROM Memories
• Read and Write Lock Bits
• Read Fuse Bits

1 Introduction
This application note describes how to use a boot loader application with one of the
XMEGA family devices (i.e. ATxmega128A1) and how an AVR® with the Store
Program Memory (SPM) instruction can be configured for Self-programming. The
sample application communicates via the UART with a PC running the AVR Open
Source Programmer (AVROSP) from Application note AVR911. This enables the
user to download Applications into Flash, Data to EEPROM and to read/write fuses
without the need for an external programmer. The example software is using the
ATxmega128A1 device with STK®600 as a target board.
Electronic designs including a microcontroller always need to be equipped with a
firmware, be it a portable music player, a hairdryer or a sewing machine. As many
Electronic designs evolve rapidly there is a growing need for being able to update
Products, which have already been shipped or sold. It may prove difficult to make
changes to the hardware, especially if the product has already reached the end
customer. But the firmware can easily be updated on products based on Flash
microcontrollers, such as the AVR family.
Many AVR microcontrollers are configured such that it is possible to create a boot
loader able to receive firmware updates and to reprogram the Flash memory on
demand. The program memory space is divided in two sections: the Boot loader
Section (BLS) and the Application Section. A Boot Loader program is placed inside
the Boot Section of the Flash memory. This program handles communication with
the host PC, and facilitates programming of both Flash and EEPROM. Once
programmed, different levels of protection can be individually applied to both the
boot and application portion of the Flash memory. The AVR thus offers a unique
flexibility, allowing the user extensive degrees of memory protection.
For general information about self programming please refer to application note
AVR109: Self programming.
